Camp Fire Watershed Effects
Project type
Class project data analysis
Date
May 2022
Introduction to Data Science as a Field class project looking at the effects of the Camp Fire in Northern California on the surrounding watershed.
Wildfires that burn structures have the potential to introduce a host of contaminants and pollutants into our watershed. Major precipitation occurred before much of the emergency clean-up of the 2018 Camp Fire which induced runoff of heavy metals into the watersheds. Here, we analyzed what watersheds (i.e. high or low burn and high or low precipitation) were more likely to have greater concentrations of zinc and lead. We found both areas of high burn and areas with higher precipitation had significantly greater lead concentrations but not zinc.
