If you know me you know I'm a huge Michigan sports fan. Side note-- I'm not a huge thanksgiving food person but all things aside thanksgiving is an incredible week for sports. NCAA basketball tournaments, thanksgiving NFL, Michigan vs Ohio State (and other rivalry games). Plus an added bonus this year is the world cup!
Anyway, this week has for as long as I can remember been filled with excitement (though mostly anxiety) about the game. In my whole time at Michigan, we never beat Ohio State in football (even though JT was short in 2016). You can imagine what the last two years have been like for us Michigan fans who haven't been around long enough to remember the 10 year war.
Michigan winning this game is really a joy like no other. In the first quarter, with Ohio State marching down the field looking more than in control, I was feeling a familiar sense of dread, and reminding myself that this was going to be a really hard game to win. While I was going through these motions, I had the thought that sports really put us through so much: "great, another three hours of paralyzing dread just to likely be disappointed." But as the touchdowns starting flowing, and I found myself jumping out of my seat and cheering and high fiving strangers in the bar, I was brought back to the the thought that sports do put us through so much, but that only makes the highs so much higher.
I was a bit more confident this year that we were going to win earlier in the game than last year, which made it all the more enjoyable. All that being said, what an incredible victory. So happy for the student athletes who have worked so hard for this and for proving everyone wrong a second year in a row.
Hail to the victors -- let's go get a big 10 championship!
